5 Must-Have Beauty Products For New Mums

I think most people don't realize how much time it actually takes for even the most basic personal grooming routines. We take it for granted. But simple things like showering, cleansing, even tooth-brushing - these are all things that new mums struggle to find the time and/or energy to do in those hazy, sleepless, early newborn days. That being said, it is a fact that looking (and smelling) good can also make you feel good.

So what's a frazzled and exhausted mum to do?

Well, I've curated my top 5 favorite beauty must-haves for new mums and I'm sharing it here! These are all items that I personally use. They're all affordable, effective, and take very little time to use, so you can spend more time with your little one (or sleeping, let's be honest).

  1. Dry shampoo
Being able to wash, dry, and style your hair at least 2-3 times a week is a luxury for new mums. The truth is, even taking regular showers can be an almost impossible task for new mums! That's why dry shampoo is a must-have in my house. I just spritz in on and comb it through, and no one will be able to tell that I haven't washed my hair in days.

Batiste Dry Shampoo is a fantastic budget option that works better than most of the ones I've tried within the price range, and the original scent is still my favorite.

  2. Baby Wipes
Unless you're going the cloth wipes route for your baby, disposable baby wipes are likely already an item you have in your house. Apart from being used to wipe cute baby butts, wipes are great for freshening up your important spots like your pits and vaj - vital areas, as you know! Plus, this is a good way for you to avoid smelling like baby vomit too.

  3. Micellar Water
I love that someone created a wipe-on, all-in-one cleanser like this. You don't even need to rinse it off! This is my go-to product when I need to cleanse my face but I don't have two hands free to properly wash my face with water (or I do have two hands but I'm wearing baby on my front so I still can't wash my face properly). I wouldn't say it replaces my usual cleanser entirely, but it's definitely something I used a LOT in the early days. The one I use is Garnier Pure Active Micellar Water. Some people use it as a makeup remover too, but I've found it's more effective as a cleanser after using a regular makeup remover first.

  4. BB Cream
Most people would think that makeup would be the last thing on a new mum's mind. But the truth is that in the age of "we visited the baby" selfies, and of course the "my baby kept me up all night and I look utter crap but I need to look like I've got my shit together" selfies, looking good is a concern for new mums these days (and that's okay!). BB creams (and CC creams) are a quick way for the exhausted mama to get selfie-ready! My favorite thing about BB creams is the fact that it acts as a moisturizer too - love me some multi-tasking products. The NYX BB Cream is a fantastic, affordable option for light coverage.

  5. Quick-dry Nail Polish
This is my go-to product for a quick pick-me-up when I felt like I was in a rut in those early newborn days. Just swipe on some brightly-colored quick-dry nail polish (or a quick-dry top coat over regular nail polish) and in 5 minutes, I've perked right up! Most mamas don't have the time for a full-on mani-pedi at the local nail salon in those first weeks, and waiting for nail polish to dry when you DIY it will just take too long (and in my case, is an extremely stressful affair thanks to the big white couch in my living room). So this is a fantastic option for a speedy mani-pedi. And you don't even have to leave your house!

It seems trivial, right? Why would you need to feel pretty when you're on this amazing journey of motherhood and you can bask in that delightful newborn smell and you are an amazing, majestic, magical person? I'll tell you why: because after dealing with baby shit and vomit, swollen breasts, sleepless nights, and popping an actual human being out your vagina (or recovering from major surgery that brought a human being into this world), a mama deserves to feel glam!
